Leyland Cypress (x Cupressocyparis leylandii), commonly known as Green Leylandii:
Characteristics:
- Foliage: Leyland Cypress has dense, feathery, dark green foliage that is scale-like in appearance. The foliage is evergreen, maintaining its color throughout the year.
- Growth Habit: It is a fast-growing coniferous tree that can reach impressive heights. It has a pyramidal shape with dense branching.
- Growth Rate: Leyland Cypress is renowned for its rapid growth rate. It can grow up to 2 to 3 feet (60 to 90 cm) or more in a single year under optimal conditions, making it one of the fastest-growing trees.
Planting Instructions:
1. Site Selection:
- Choose a location with well-draining soil. Leyland Cypress prefers soil that is not too wet, as it can be susceptible to root rot in overly soggy conditions.
- It prefers full sunlight to thrive and achieve its best growth rate and appearance.
2. Planting Time:
- Planting can be done in the fall or spring. Avoid planting during extreme weather conditions, especially during the hottest part of summer.
3. Planting Process:
- Dig a hole that is slightly larger than the root ball of the tree.
- Carefully remove the tree from its container and place it in the hole. The top of the root ball should be level with the surrounding soil.
- Fill the hole with soil, gently compacting it as you go to remove air pockets.
- Water the tree thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the roots.
4. Watering:
- Regular watering is essential for the first year to establish a strong root system. Leyland Cypress prefers moist soil but can tolerate periods of drought once established.
